Sleep Apnea and Excess Weight
Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep, leading to poor sleep quality and various health complications. Obesity is a major risk factor for developing sleep apnea.
At Harvey Brooker Weight Loss for Men we have helped thousands of Toronto men lose weight long-term and improve their sleep apnea.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Common Issues Associated with Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea related to obesity can lead to a range of difficulties and health complications, including:
- Excessive daytime sleepiness: Poor sleep quality caused by sleep apnea can lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, making it difficult to stay alert and focused during the day.
- Hypertension: Sleep apnea can contribute to the development of high blood pressure, as repeated episodes of low oxygen levels during sleep can cause blood vessels to constrict.
- Cardiovascular issues: Sleep apnea has been linked to a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and heart arrhythmias, due to the stress placed on the cardiovascular system by disrupted breathing patterns during sleep.
- Type 2 diabetes: Sleep apnea can increase insulin resistance, leading to a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Cognitive and mood disturbances: Poor sleep quality can negatively impact cognitive function, memory, and mood, leading to problems with concentration, forgetfulness, and irritability.
Sleep Apnea in Men
Men with obesity-related sleep apnea may face unique challenges and concerns, such as:
- Higher prevalence: Men are more likely to be affected by sleep apnea than women, particularly those with obesity, which can further increase the risk.
- Snoring: Men with sleep apnea are more likely to snore loudly, which can disrupt the sleep of their partners and contribute to relationship difficulties.
- Hormonal imbalances: Sleep apnea can lead to reduced testosterone levels in men, which can negatively affect libido, mood, and energy levels.
- Reluctance to seek help: Men may be less likely to seek medical help for sleep issues, delaying the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea and potentially exacerbating related health complications.

- I don't normally review things, but I gotta give 5 stars to the Brooker program. I joined in 2015 and lost 160 lbs thanks to their fantastic approach to helping me understand my relationship with food. I saw lots of other guys during my weight loss who were able to go off their diabetes medication, and honestly, it just works. If you've tried other programs (as I had and gained the weight right back), I urge you to check Brooker out and see what they're all about. The people there are fantastic and they help motivate you on your journey. Thanks to the program, I was able to get off my CPAP machine and my family is very happy to have their husband/dad still around. <3 <3 <3read moreread lessForeshots Photography23/03/2024
